Months wasted by brands searching for the best country to produce clothing while asking the wrong question.
One factory can not fit all. A perfect 50,000 unit industrial workwear order does not translate to a perfect 300 piece premium streetwear order regardless of country location.
To get started, there are three key figures you need to figure out:
how much you think you'll sell
how much you want to charge for each item
what level of quality you're aiming for.
Once you have the numbers, you can start to rule out some options and make your decision easier.
China: Scale and The Trap
China is still the manufacturing system in the world. Its edge doesn't come from wages alone. It comes from how tightly packed its supply chain's. The fabric mills, trim suppliers, dye houses and the cut-and-sew factories all sit within the province.
If you make quantities and need to keep unit costs as low, as possible to make your business work China is hard to beat.
But there is a MASSIVE trap: supplier selection. China can produce world-class luxury garments, but it can also produce absolute garbage. It is common for a factory to send a flawless pre-production sample, then quietly swap in cheaper zippers or lower-grade thread for the bulk run to pad their margins.
Turkey: The Relationship Heavyweight
Turkey solves the gap between European quality expectations and Asian scale. For European brands, the logistical advantage is huge. Shorter transit times also make it much easier to visit the factory.
Turkey excels at premium cottons, heavyweights, and complex washes where the hand-feel of the garment is the main selling point.
But you can't email a tech pack to Istanbul and wait for a perfect delivery. Turkish manufacturing is deeply relationship-driven. Requirements that feel obvious to an EU buyer must be explicitly written down, translated, and agreed upon. You have to build the rules during the sampling phase, not after 2,000 units have already been cut.
Portugal and EU: Premium Play
Portugal is a strong choice for brands that want premium European manufacturing. The focus is less on getting the lowest possible unit price and more on quality, finishing, and the value of having a Made in EU product.
Communication is generally easier, regulatory expectations align, and oversight is incredibly easy.
The obvious disadvantage?
It kills your margin if your customer isn't willing to pay for it. Paying Portuguese manufacturing rates for a highly price-sensitive basic is commercial suicide.
Volume Reality Check
A €3 difference in unit cost doesn't break a 150-piece collection.
Across 50,000 units, that same €3 difference is your entire marketing budget.
Stop Shopping For Flags
At 888Wholesale, we don't believe every product belongs in the same factory.
We manage production across Portugal, Turkey, China, and our own facilities. We do this because finding a factory online is easy, but finding the right factory, stress-testing them, and forcing them to hold to a standard is exhausting.
Based on your target price, volume, and quality, we place your production in the ecosystem that actually makes sense for the product.
Figure out the unit volume and retail price point first, and let the math dictate the geography. If you need help running those numbers, our sourcing team can tell you exactly where your product belongs.
